Ladies stun Seacourt in fight against relegation

25 Mar 2018

Knowing that they needed a clear 3-1 or better win against Seacourt to stand any chance of avoiding relegation, the ladies played some terrific tennis and fell only just short of a remarkable clear victory. Both the opening rubbers went to match tie breaks, Emily Wilkinosn and Caron Howe controlling theirs throughout, while Seacourt's experience first pairing, Lou Gren and Linda Medlow saved their best tennis for the tie break and still only just edged past Sue Palmer and Dreen Chestnutt. Sue and Dreen then went on to blitz Seacourt's second pair 6-1 6-2, giving Rowlands a huge games advantage, but try as they could Emily and Caron were always marginally behind as Lou and Linda raised their game yet again to ensure that the match finished 2-2 on rubbers. Rowlands claimed the extra winning draw point but it will not quite be enough to save them from relegation to Diviison 4 next winter. However, this is more a reflection of the ever improving standard of the leagues themselves rather than any fall off in the ladies teams performance, several clubs much bigger than Rowkands having entered the leagues or strengthend existing teams ovee the last couple of seasons
