We are a small, friendly, private club set up by a group of tennis playing enthusiasts in 1973. Many of that original group are still members - and still play regularly. We have around 300 members of which around xxx adults and yyy juniors could be classed as active playing members.
Two courts were built initially, on land owned by the Parish Council and leased to the Tennis Club. Demand was such that it was soon evident that a third court was needed and this was added in 19xx. The courts are still leased from the Council, but the club is fully responsible for their maintenance. This includes cleaning, painting and resurfacing - a not inconsiderable commitment for a small village club. However a comprehensive 20 year financial plan was drawn up in 1998 with the aim of making sure membership fees were set at a level to ensure that the long term resurfacing commitments could be met. As a result of this long term planning the club is financially secure and yet still offers tremendous value to members.
Most of the tennis played at Rowlands is social, with informal club sessions held throughout the summer from 6pm on Monday & Friday evenings. In recent years we have re-introduced a winter club session from 2pm to 4pm (1.30 to 3.30) when the clocks change!).
All these sessions are "supervised" by a volunteer who organises those attending into suitable "fours" to make sure everyone gets a chance to play with everyone else - good and not so good alike!
We also run a number of socially biased American Tournaments over the summer, together with events for Junior members, including a Parent/ Child competition.
For the competitively minded we run an annual knock out tournament - with all the usual categories, but also several age group restricted ones. And in recent years we have entered teams in the Portsmouth & District Tennis Leagues - with some success.
So we can cater for you if you want to test your skills against other local players or other players at the club, if you just want a regular run around to keep fit(ish!) or simply knock around with your friends and/or family. Come along and join us - we will make yoy feel welcome.
